Sale Sheep Show & Bred Ewe Sale

Bred Ewe: A pregnant female sheep - The average gestation, depending upon the breed, is 145 - 148 days.

This Show is specifically for the Bred Ewe Sale, which is in the form of an Auction. Placement in the Show determines order of Auction. All of the ewes (females) in the Auction enter the show ring on Friday at 1:00 P.M. Groups are categorized by breed and age. Each breed has a unique breed standard and each group is judged against their breed standards which include conformation and fleece quality. The term "conformation" refers to the body form of the animal. It varies by breed and breed type. The anatomy and skeletal function and how it impacts the animal’s health, adaptability, longevity, and productivity determine the quality of conformation of each sheep. Smooth shoulders and straight backs, for example, are desirable traits.

All of the sheep placing 1st and 2nd in each age group come back into the ring and are judged once more in a combined age group.  At this time the Champion and Reserve Champion Ewe is selected.

Placement in this Show determines the Sale order: Each breed/division in the show is divided into 3 to 4 age groups. Champion Ewe is sold first, Reserve Champion second, and are followed by Aged Ewes (over 2 years of age) then Yearling Ewes (one to two years of age) and Ewe Lambs (under 1 year of age).

Some people come to this auction looking to expand their flock’s genetics, increase their numbers, or to start a flock. Many buyers get one sheep and other buyers get 5 or 6.  Some people like to watch and learn what a auction is all about.
