Eastern European Woolly Embroidery - SOLD OUT

This workshop will survey a selection of traditional folk art embroidery styles and stitches from the villages of several countries within the Carpathian Basin in Eastern Europe, working a sampler that you will then be able to complete at home.

We will work a sampler of small motifs from several different embroidery styles from countries including Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Ukraine, Slovakia, and Hungary. We will use traditional wool thread on linen fabric, produced in the Hudson Valley and in Eastern Europe.

We will explore different stitching techniques and discuss a bit of the history behind the embroideries, techniques and materials. We will discuss different methods to transfer the embroidery designs to fabric, embroidery techniques that produce a clean back for your work (if you wish to have one!), and how to care for your finished piece.

All materials are included in the materials fee. You may want to bring a headlight or small desk lamp as lighting in the workshop areas can be a little dim.

Prerequisite:  Basic hand-sewing skills, basic embroidery skills.

Skill Level Required:  Advanced Beginner/Intermediate level embroiderers

Homework:  None

Materials Info

A material fee of $30 will be collected by the instructor by Venmo or Paypal. invoiced prior to workshop, starting 9/19/2023. Please keep an eye out for the invoice and pay in advance so that I can have everything ready for you the morning of class).  Materials include 9" by 15" piece of linen fabric, wool thread in a selection of colors, needle, hoop, handout with pattern and background information on each design, transfer paper, pencil, small project carry bag.

A note on materials: the wool embroidery thread is the single most costly component. I am hoping to collaborate with a local dyer in the Hudson Valley but if that does not work out we will use another high-quality US-made thread.

Students must bring: We suggest bringing a headlamp or small task lamp to help see your stitching better, either battery operated or with an extension cord - you might find this extremely useful for a full day of embroidery!

NOTE:  There is no onsite ATM on Thursday and Friday.
