This workshop will survey a selection of traditional folk art embroidery styles and stitches from the villages of several countries within the Carpathian Basin in Eastern Europe. This year’s workshop sampler is inspired by Slavic ritual cloths, as well as stylized sun and star motifs from several different Eastern European embroidery styles. We will work the sampler in wool thread on linen background fabric, explore different stitching techniques, and discuss the history of the embroideries and how embroidered textiles were historically used. We will talk about different methods to transfer the embroidery designs to fabric, embroidery techniques that produce a clean back for your work (if you wish to have one!), and how to care for your finished piece.

Kati Lovasz
Kati
Lovasz

Katalin Lovász (Kati) was born and raised in Hungary, and had a passion for textiles and embroidery since a young age. She learned to sew from her grandmother, who in Communist-era Hungary made many of her family’s clothes, and collected patterns from Burda magazines smuggled in from then-West Germany and passed around among relatives.

Kati attended numerous folk art workshops and camps in Hungary as a teenager, then moved to the United States for college and later graduate school. She wrote her Ph.D. work on women’s representations in film and digital media and how costumes and fashion can be used to protest repressive social norms. After leaving academia, Kati founded a small business designing and producing sewing and embroidery patterns.
