Cellulose fbers such as cotton and linen present a whole new set of challenges for the Natural Dyer. Originating from plants, they lack the scale structure associated with wool and the dyeing process becomes more complex. By understanding the methodology and application of color from natural sources, the fiber artist can achieve success using fiber and color sources found in the world around them, resulting in a rich palette of colors.
This workshop is designed for those wishing to expand their dye knowledge, moving beyond the use of wool. We will be learning how to prepare the cotton and linen: scouring, mordanting and applying tannin and then use dyes sourced from both historic and foraged natural dye materials.
MASKS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS WORKSHOP
Prerequisite: This workshop is open to all levels but it will be of value to those students who have had a little natural dye workshop experience. The focus will be on cellulose fibers and the techniques specific to cotton and linen when using natural dyes.
Skill Level Required: Beginner
