In this workshop we will create a stitch sampler based on Eastern European folk art embroidery traditionally worked using plant-based thread on handwoven linen cloth. We will explore several traditional shapes and through them build a library of stitches that can be referenced for future embroidery work.
We will work on motifs primarily from Hungary, Slovakia, and Ukraine, looking at the older, more structured motifs that used only one or two colors to the more recent versions of these styles that are wildly colorful and freeform. We will discuss the history behind the embroidery, how different styles influenced each other and interrelated, as well as how these textiles were traditionally used.
This workshop is suitable for adventurous beginners, and will cover different methods of transferring designs to fabric, as well as how to create a clean back for your work, should you want to, and how to care for your finished piece. We will use cotton thread on a cotton background. All materials are included in the materials fee. You may want to bring a headlight or small desk lamp as lighting in the workshop areas can be a little dim.
